Extend your learning edge, embrace your identity as a therapist, and build your private practice knowledge.  Whether you are just starting out in your career, or you are a qualified and experienced counsellor, our clinical and professional resources can help you take the next step.

Hi, I'm Angie the Director and Principal Therapist at The Counselling Space.

I’ve been a therapist for more than 30 years, working in senior clinical roles with mental health, child, youth and family services in NSW, Victoria and South Australia.  It is an immense privilege to have supported thousands of clients over this time, doing the work I love.  I have also supervised and managed numerous clinical, community and government teams during this time, and my passion is for seeing practitioners expand their horizons, and experience a stronger sense of confidence, efficacy and wellbeing.

I am trained in a number of therapeutic frameworks, and have qualifications in social work, family therapy and play therapy as well as in community sector management and human resources.

What that means in practice, is that I understand the myriad of dilemmas that confront therapists, counsellors and community sector leaders in their day to day work. I offer clinical supervision, professional mentoring and private practice development so you can feel confident in the work you do.

If you live in Coffs Harbour, you even have the opportunity to use our consulting rooms! We currently have a room available for part time practitioners up to 4 days per week (Mon - Thurs).

"SuperVision is a powerfully reflective process, proving the myriad of results that joint effort, with curiosity, in a safe space can achieve."
— Angie, The Counselling Space

I love SuperVision!  My commitment to high-quality and engaging supervision comes from three decades of  clinical practice and leadership, with individuals, groups, teams and whole organisations, in a wide variety of settings.

I draw from:

  • Collaborative Practice which recognises learning and change is most powerful when it emerges from our own insights
  • Both Narrative and Strengths-Based Approaches that help practitioners deepen a new story and a values based professional identity, while celebrating existing skills and strengthening new ones.
  • An Intersectional Lens that invites exploration of  privilege and oppression, including in the supervisory relationship
  • Neuro-Inclusive Approaches that allow neurodivergent supervisees to bring their whole self to SuperVision and guard against burnout
  • Playfulness that incorporates expressive and experiential tools in the framework of SuperVision, for when language alone is not enough.

I provide clinical and professional SuperVision for:

  • Social Workers, including those:
    • seeking Mental Health Accreditation
    • embarking on Autism assessments
    • expanding their clinical role
    • are supervisors themselves.
  • Play Therapists
  • Counsellors
  • and psychologists, psychotherapists and allied health professionals keen to incorporate a systemic and neuroaffirming lens to their practice.

"Great leaders identify and make the most of the wisdom and experience in their team. They build a stronger, more successful organisation through strengthening teams, leading collaboratively and not being afraid to name any elephants lurking in the room."

- Angie, at The Counselling Space (and part time Elephant Wrangler!)

I was nudged into leadership many years ago, without the desire or training to be there - only to discover I seemed to have a knack for it.   And that I actually enjoyed it!

Since then, I have gone on to lead teams, departments  and organisations in the health, welfare, community and government sectors, and have been brought in as a consultant to manage conflict, strengthen teams and build meaningful strategic plans.

I now support others to move into or deepen their leadership identity, and work with them to:

  • build the micro-skills for good leadership
  • explore their preferred leadership style and how to tailor it to the needs of individual staff
  • become confident in noticing and naming the tricky bits in teams, and how to repair and resolve
  • prioritising and balancing the demands of operations, performance indicators, budgets, staffing, Boards/Committees,  and strategic development
  • doing the hard things while remaining ethical and true to your values
  • taking care of yourself as well as your team.

If you or your organisation would like to talk further about leadership development, please feel welcome to reach out.

"There is no cookie cutter approach to building a private practice that flourishes for everyone. It's about balancing the capacity to do what you love, with the wisdom to do what you need."
— Angie, The Counselling Space

Are you a therapist ready to take the exciting leap into starting your own private practice? Or are you already there, and want to know how to scale and grow? Well, here's the scoop: there's no one-size-fits-all roadmap to success in this adventure.

Most people start in private practice because they want to do the work they love, take ownership of their vision,  contribute to their community and profession, and hopefully make a financial success of it.  Where you start, whether you scale up or down, whether you go it alone or with others is up to you.

I've had the privilege of being the go-to companion for many therapists as they embark on the unpredictable but incredibly rewarding journey of building their private practice.

I've helped them tailor a path to what they love most. Together, we uncovered creative and personalised approaches to tackle the necessary tasks and challenges.

So if you've been working for others and are now ready to start on your own ......

Don’t make the mistake of assuming clients will come to you based on your reputation. I can help you transition into the world of private practice, so you can leverage your reputation and connections for a successful start.

If you're already in private practice but struggling to attract clients or build your business .....

If you know you are good at what you do, you’ve tried all sorts of marketing, and the clients still aren’t coming through the door, we need to understand what is going on. Despite the advertising of some quick fix private practice programs, there is no one-size-fits-all to bring in the clients you want to see. My approach is tailored to individuals, to their market and how to tackle the roadblocks specific to those circumstances.

If your solo practice is successful and you're wondering what next .....

I can help you explore whether scaling and expanding is right for you, and if so, how to start safely, manage the risks and importantly, how to hold on to the part of the work that inspires you most, that gives you joy, and makes you happy in your day.
